Overview about Radical Nephrectomy
Nephrectomy refers to the removal of the kidney, either completely or a part of it. The approach to removing the kidney depends upon the condition of the patient and the extent of the disease.
The need to remove the kidneys occurs when they are damaged beyond treatment. The cause of the damage of kidneys could be severe injury, chronic infection, calculus or some obstruction. Nephrectomy or removal of the kidneys could be of two types:
1. Simple or partial: In this nephrectomy, only the diseased tissues in the kidneys are removed.
2. Radical or complete: The radical nephrectomy is the complete removal of the diseased kidney as well as any adjacent or adjoining tissues and structures.
The commonest of the reasons to perform nephrectomy is to remove the tumors from the kidneys. These tumors are usually cancerous and if not removed can spread to other parts of the body. Renal carcinoma is the commonest form of kidney cancer that starts in the cells of the tubes in the kidneys. Even if the tumor is not cancerous, there could be the need to remove the kidney if it is badly damaged.
There are a number of factors that are considered prior to deciding the number of tissues that need to be removed. These factors are:
Overall functioning of the kidney
Number of tumors
Whether the tumors are confined to the kidneys
Affect on the kidney
Functioning of the other kidney
Spread of cancer to nearby tissues
Test result of the MRI, CT scan and ultrasound decide the extent of the disease. Nephrectomy is usually done with the help of a laparoscope. This method is usually preferred as it is easier, quicker and less painful as compared to traditional surgery.
